The daughter of Lady Eveleen Pounden and painter James Maclaren Smith, Kathleen Eileen Moray Smith was born in Enniscorthy, County Wexford, Ireland, in 1878. The family changed their name to Gray in 1893, after her mother inherited a peerage from an uncle in Scotland and claimed her title, Baroness Gray.
